Owner of demolished Embu brewery charged

What you need to know:

  • Mr Kuria claims police stole Sh90,000 from him during his arrest.
  • During the raid, dozens of used condoms and sanitary pads were retrieved from tanks containing the illicit brew.

Problems facing an Embu-based brewer whose three-storey brewery was demolished last week deepened on Monday after he was brought to a Runyenjes court and charged with selling illicit liquor.

Runyenjes Principal Magistrate Beatrice Kimemia also ordered that Leonard Nyaga Kiura, popularly known as Kathambo, be remanded at the Runyenjes Police Station for five days to allow the police to conclude investigations into his activities.

She said the police were right to ask for more time to investigate the activities inside his brewery and the content of the brew.

On Monday, Ms Kimemia ruled that the suspect be placed under police custody until Monday next week when bail terms would be considered.

Mr Kiura denied that he was found hawking 55 sachets of mashore on a motorcycle at Ena Market.

The accused told the magistrate that police allegedly stole Sh90,000 from him on July 19 during the arrest.

However, the prosecution argued that it was premature for Mr Kiura to make the allegations since investigations had not yet been finalised.

The case will be mentioned on July 27.

HIDDEN LIQUOR

Last week, administrators, led by Embu County Commissioner Amos Gathecha, supervised the demolition of the building associated with the accused.

During the raid, dozens of used condoms and sanitary pads were retrieved from tanks containing the illicit brew.

The building, popularly known as "White House", was brought down by a National Youth Service bulldozer, revealing liquor and brewing ingredients hidden in an underground store.
