Ex-MP sues State over murder case

Former Nakuru Town MP David Manyara has sued the government for wrongfully and maliciously charging him with the murder of 10 people.

Mr Manyara, who represented the town in Parliament between 1997 and 2002, says the State held him at the Nakuru GK Prison for close to two years before the High Court dismissed the murder charges against him and acquitted him.

“I was in remand for 23 months and nine days and my reputation has been greatly injured as a result of the incarceration,” he stated.

He said he was arrested on January 6, 2003 and taken to Menengai Police Station before being charged with killing 10 people.

More than 20 people were killed in two estates in Nakuru on the night of January 5, 2003 when suspected Mungiki sect members attacked residents with machetes.

Many others suffered panga cuts during the raid. Mr Manyara, his driver and 12 suspected Mungiki members were accused of the murder the following day.
