Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed on Tuesday evening when a fierce fire gutted three dormitories at Nyamira Boys High School, Nyamira County.

More than 200 students at the institution whose dorms were destroyed will spend the night in the cold after their beddings went up in flames as they watched haplessly.

The School Principal Mr Gerald Orina said no one was injured during the evening incident as students were in class when the fire broke out.

The Nyamira South DEO Titus Mbata and the Nyamira County executive members led by County Secretary Eric Onchana responded swiftly and purchased mattresses and blankets for the affected students.

β€œIt is not possible for the students to go home as it is already late. We will get them mattresses and blankets which they will use in the school hall where they will be allocated to spend the night,” Mr Mbata said.

Nyamira police led by OCPD Rico Ngare and his Administration County Commandant Mwarungu Karimbo, members of the public, students and teachers fought the inferno unsuccessfully as they did not have firefighting equipment.

The County has neither fire brigades nor fire fighting engines.
