Four family members drown as car plunges into river in Kirinyaga

Four family members drowned after a vehicle they were travelling in plunged into Nyamindi River in Kirinyaga County.

Those who died in the Thursday night incident include a man, his wife and two relatives. They were heading to Kutus from Embu town.

Witnesses said the driver of the saloon car was overtaking a lorry at Nyamindi bridge but hit it on the side.

The driver lost control of the car and hit a guard rail before plunging into the river.

The driver and his wife died on the spot while the two men were rescued but succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at Embu Level Five Hospital.

There was a major traffic snarl up as residents from the nearby Difathas village blocked the Embu-Makutano road to rescue the victims.

A resident said he heard loud bang at around 11pm and rushed to the scene only to find the car in the river.

The Kirinyaga County Police Commander Mr Rono Bunei said the bridge is a black spot and urged drivers to be cautious when driving across it.
