Former Mau Mau freedom fighters are demanding what they are referring to as better recognition from both county and national governments.

The Mau Mau Veterans Association yesterday presented a petition to Nyeri County Assembly in which they are also demanding compensation for their efforts to liberate Kenya.

They also want a university set up with the sole mandate of researching and analysing Kenya’s culture.

“The university should also document the country’s independence struggle as well as the history of Mau Mau fighters. Only them will we feel appreciated,” association chairman Gitu wa Kahengeri said.

Mr Kahengeri who spoke while handing their petition to the county assembly said the State has not done enough for freedom fighters.

“We are calling on the assembly to submit our petition to the public so that the people can understand what we did for this country,” he added.

Nyeri Speaker David Mugo assured the veterans their petition will be considered according to the Petition to the County Assembly of Nyeri Act which has already been enacted. The Act aims at creating a framework through which all petitions in the county will be handled.

“I will submit it to the assembly on Tuesday. It will then be referred to relevant committees and considered within 60 days,” Mr Mugo said.
