A group of youths on Tuesday threw their weight behind embattled Garissa Governor Nathif Jama over allegations he irregularly leased ambulances.

The youths said the ambulances had significantly reduced mortality rate in the county.

Speaking to journalists at a Garissa Hotel, their leader Abdullahi Khalif said since the inception of devolution, county residents under the leadership of Mr Jama have a reason to smile because of the ambulances.

Mr Khalif said through the scheme, there had been increased access to basic health care, especially at the referral hospital for people from far areas such as Bothay in Hulugho sub-county.

They claimed the case against Mr Jama is politically motivated by powerful individuals in Jubilee administration.

“It’s all about a political motivated case which is aimed at taking Garissa county back to the old days when access of basic necessities such as health was a major challenge. It’s a blow to common mwananchi in Garissa County since the ambulances that have been turned into a political battle to measure political weight,” he said.

The youth at the same time appealed to the offices of the Director of Public Prosecution, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Judiciary to make sure they are not swayed by politicians.

Garissa Governor Nathif Jama and seven of his County officials are set to be charged in court over leasing of Ambulances and other corruption related offences.
