Governor orders audit into hire of office building

Nyandarua Governor Daniel Waithaka has ordered for an audit of the hiring of a private building for the governor’s office which cost tax payers millions of shillings.

He said a committee that was mandated to look for a building to rent for the governor’s office settled on the one in Ol Kalou town.

Addressing an education meeting for Nyandarua Central district in Ol Kalou, the governor, without elaborating, said he had ordered the county executive committee member for Finance, Mr Nelson Ngaruiya, to carry out a full audit of the project.

Civil society groups have claimed that the county government spent Sh20 million to renovate the building said to be owned by a retired army officer.

The groups also claim Mr Waithaka’s government will be paying Sh400,000 per month in rent.

STATEMENT ISSUED

Last month, the governor’s office issued a statement indicating that the renovation had cost Sh12 million.

Mr Waithaka on Monday said the residents should be watchdogs public expenditure in the county.

He said there were reports that some people were syphoning fuel from trucks that had been hired to upgrade roads in the county.

“Please be watchdogs of how resources are used in the county,” he said.
