Kirinyaga County Governor Joseph Ndathi Monday sacked five workers for allegedly failing to perform their duties.

Two senior officials were interdicted while three of the county workers were sacked after the governor found them "idling around their place of work" during his impromptu in Kagio town.

"I made a surprise tour of the town and found some of the workers sleeping while others idling instead of working. I had to take an instant disciplinary action against them," Mr Ndathi told the Nation at his Kutus office.

The two senior officials were interdicted for failing to supervise the three junior workers who were supposed to be cleaning the town which was in a filthy state by the time the governor arrived.

"The senior officials should justify why they should also not be relieved of their duties," he said adding that they will remain interdicted until further notice.

SHOCKING STATE OF AFFAIRS

The governor said he was shocked to find the workers relaxing while rotting garbage and filth covered the streets.

"I was perplexed when I found the workers who are paid to deliver services idling and others sleeping on wooden structures while the town was in a shocking state of affairs," he explained.

Mr Ndathi warned that his government would weed out all lazy workers saying they were a liability to the county.

The Governor said he was committed to ensure quality services were delivered to the public and vowed to crack the whip on errant workers.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

The Governor also said he was committed to ensuring the county registers massive economic growth in all sectors but warned that for the region to record any meaningful development, everyone must work hard without being coerced.

He underscored the need for leaders to unite to develop the county and create employment for the youth.

At the same time Mr Ndathi sent a message of condolences to all the people who lost their relatives in the Westgate Mall terror attack.

"Despite of what happened we shall remain united more than ever because the terrorists will be defeated," he said.
