Isiolo County officials arrested over clashes

Three County officials were arrested Saturday for allegedly inciting youth in clashes that rocked the town last Friday.

Those arrested are Bula Pesa Ward Representative Moses Kithinji, Chief Officer for Trade Hudson Kinyua and Bula Pesa Ward Administrator Witherford Mwirigi.

The three will appear in court on Monday alongside 10 other people who were arrested on Friday over looting during the clashes.

Isiolo County Criminal and Investigation Officer David Cheruiyot said the three are being held for inciting the youth leading to a confrontation in Isiolo Town that left three people injured.

Property was also destroyed during the clashes between youth from the Meru and Borana communities.

Mr Cheruiyot added that police were also investigating some people who posted hate messages on social media.

“The three (county officials) might also be charged with robbery with violence alongside the other 10 suspects,” he said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery held a meeting with Meru and Isiolo leaders on Saturday where he directed the police to arrest politicians and individuals inciting communities in the two counties.
