Twenty three touts have been arrested in connection to the skirmishes that lasted for one hour.

The police officer sustained chest injuries after he was stoned by the touts.

Isiolo police boss Charles Ontita said one of the touts, Mr Mohammed Ali, started stoning vehicles at the stage prompting owners to report the incident to the Isiolo Police Station.

“One of our officers had responded to the incident but he was attacked and [he] asked for reinforcement from his colleagues,” said Mr Ontita.

Police were forced to shoot in the air to disperse the crowd that was throwing stones at them.

Mr James Gitonga, the chairman of Isiolo market traders, sustained bullet injuries in his left leg while Miriam Kagweria, 30, was injured on her right thigh.

The two were selling vegetables at a nearby market and were later rushed to Isiolo County Referral Hospital for treatment.

Business in Isiolo Town was paralysed as traders rushed to close their premises for fear of looting while motorists run for safety.

The suspects will be arraigned in court Thursday.
