Two chiefs have been arrested for allegedly stealing and selling relief food in Merti, Isiolo County.

Isiolo County Commissioner George Natembeya said the chiefs will be arraigned on Monday.

“They were spotted by residents selling relief food to one of the local stores in Merti town and were reported to police,” Mr Natembeya said.

A shopkeeper who bought the food is also in police custody.

Speaking in Merti, Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri warned administrators, saying those found culpable will not be spared.

“Relief food is for the needy and is free of charge,” the CS said.

Mr Kiunjuri distributed relief food in Sericho, Eresaboru, Garba Tula, Merti and Biliko.

About 1,000 sacks of maize, 200 sacks of beans and rice and 50 cartons of cooking oil were distributed.
