The Isiolo County government has announced plans to establish the first university in the region.

Speaking while issuing bursary cheques worth Sh35 million, Governor Godana Doyo said a taskforce will be constituted to gather views from locals on the proposed project.

He said 100 acres of land have been set aside to construct the Northern Frontier University at Livestock Marketing Division (LMD) holding grounds, about five kilometres from Isiolo Town.

“Rather than having campuses or branches of universities established in the region, we (county government) saw the need to have our own local university,” he said.

Mr Doyo further said experts and relevant authorities from higher learning institutions have been contacted to give views on the proposed project.

The governor also noted that some experts have given the nod to the proposed land after a tour, saying the region had lagged behind due to lack of training institutions.

“We have water and plenty of land for the establishment of the institution in Isiolo which is a gateway to other regions,” he said.

The university will serve students from Northern Kenya and other regions.

The Kenya Medical Training Institute (KMTC) is also set to open a branch in Isiolo this in September.
