Supporters of Isiolo Governor Godana Doyo and Senator Mohammed Kuti on Monday nearly clashed over a billboard erected in Isiolo Town.

The billboard, which is expected to announce Senator Kuti's entry into the gubernatorial race, evoked anger from Governor Doyo’s supporters, who threatened to pull it down.

Dr Kuti's supporters vowed to camp there until the banner is hoisted to prevent Governor Doyo's supporters from pulling it down.

The fracas caused anxiety in Isiolo Town as the two groups refused to give up on their mission while chanting slogans of their respective candidates.

The senator has announced his interest in unseating Governor Doyo and he is set to officially launch his bid.

Sources close to Governor Doyo indicated that he had summoned the town administrator and county revenue officer to ascertain the circumstances under which his “main rival” was granted authority to mount the billboard.

Isiolo County Commissioner George Natembeya, who visited the scene, said anyone found vandalising the billboard will be arrested and charged with malicious damage of property.

"It is not right for others to erect their banners for campaigns and block their opponents from exercising their democratic rights.

“The owner has already paid [the applicable tax] to the county government and if anyone has a problem, then he should challenge the matter in court," said Mr Natembeya.

He further cautioned politicians to desist from causing unnecessary tension among locals for their own political gain.
