  • Munya said he is looking forward to President Kenyatta’s visit to Meru on Saturday.

Meru Governor Peter Munya, who is also the leader of the Party of National Unity (PNU), has reaffirmed his support for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election despite his endorsement by the National Super Alliance (Nasa) principals in Meru last week.

Mr Munya, who spoke Tuesday during a tour of Isiolo International Airport, said he will not support the Nasa coalition but insisted that any politician who wants to campaign in Meru is welcome.

Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga and co-principal Moses Wetang’ula publicly endorsed Mr Munya’s re-election during their rallies, saying he is hardworking and a partner in the liberation of Kenya.

KIRAITU CHALLENGE

Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi called on Mr Munya to come clean on his support for the opposition, saying the endorsement confirmed that he was at the heart of Nasa.

The senator claimed Mr Munya is facilitating Nasa rallies in Meru, and that is why he was endorsed.

But the governor denied the allegation, saying he does not brief Mr Odinga when he comes for his campaigns in Meru.

The county boss insisted that the opposition in Meru County is desperate for votes and is allegedly looking for excuses to “throw at him” in order to get an advantage.

READ THE MOOD

“Nasa principals must have read the mood of the public that I am popular compared to my rivals (and) hence endorsing me, but that does not indicate that I am in the opposition,” he said.

He downplayed Mr Murungi’s allegations, saying he might be missing his days in Ford-Kenya.

“I am focusing on my re-election and development in Meru County. I am in PNU, which passed a resolution to support the President come the August 8 polls,” he added.

The PNU leader also said that he is looking forward to President Kenyatta’s visit to Meru on Saturday and expects him to address the miraa issue and the completion of projects by the national government.

But he said he was not worried that the President will campaign for his Jubilee rival, saying he has been doing his own campaigns.
