A middle aged woman died instantly after she was hit by a car on Wednesday evening in Embu.

Six other persons suffered minor injuries when the saloon car swerved off the road and hit them before plunging into Kapingazi River near Kangaru Market along the Embu-Meru highway.

The driver of the car, which was traveling towards Embu, was about to overtake a lorry when the car hit the lorry and veered off the road knocking down the woman who was cutting grass by the roadside.

According to Ms Purity Kagendo, an eyewitness, the vehicle then moved to the other side of the road as the driver struggled to control it during the 5.30pm incident.

It then hit two pedestrians, a man and a woman before plunging into the river.

“I saw the vehicle appear to fly a few metres high and then hit the bridge guard rails. It happened so fast,” said Ms Kagendo who was picking coffee in a nearby farm.

She said the vehicle had four passengers, two men and two women who suffered slight injuries.

“One of the passengers, a woman was participating in the rescue efforts. They appeared well,” she said.

The injured were taken to Embu Level Five Hospital while the body of the woman was taken to the hospital’s mortuary
