The Kenya Wildlife Service has recruited thirteen young people in Marsabit to join the fight against poaching in the country.

The recruitment exercise, which was temporarily delayed by a heavy downpour, was conducted at Marsabit Stadium where two women and 11 men joined the Service.

KWS Manyani Law Enforcement Academy commandant Dickson Lesimirdana said the exercise was free, fair and a success. More than 200 youths from across the county turned up.

"We have recruited 13 candidates today. They will undergo mandatory basic intensive paramilitary training at the KWS Law Enforcement Academy before being posted," said Mr Lesimirdana.

He added that for somebody to be recruited to the Service, they must have attained a minimum KSCE grade of D+.

The new recruits will report to the Academy on April 30.

The exercise began at 11am instead of the planned time of 8am due to heavy rain in Marsabit town.

One of the recruits, Ms Abida Gonjobe, termed the exercise free and fair and said she was looking forward to becoming a KWS ranger, adding that her dream had come true.
