Hours to his death, Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang' was photographed with Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi in Kikuyu Town in Kiambu County.

This was during the visit by the Senate Roads Committee to inspect the southern bypass in Kikuyu.

The committee recommended the construction of a one-lane road, off the bypass, to enter the town.

The bypass was locking out the town, leaving it without an entrance, a situation that angered the residents and investors.

In his signature style, Senator Kajwang' told excited Kikuyu residents, “Tutapambana na hii,” (We will deal with this problem).

He seemed of good health as he stood under the hot sun for about one and a half hours along the southern bypass.

With him were senators Chris Obure, Judith Sijeny, Kimani Wamatangi and Kiambu County Assembly members, who addressed the public and consulted with officials from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and China Road and Bridge Corporation.

He towered over those present as he described how the road should be redesigned.

Senator Wamatangi said the news of the senator’s death was shocking as the two had been together a few hours earlier.

"I offer my condolences. We have lost a great leader who had a great sense of humour just hours after I welcomed him to Kiambu County to assess the southern bypass. As a country we grieve over the loss," said Senator Wamatangi.
