Kiambu Women Representative Anna Nyokabi has welcomed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s move to deal with alcoholism in central Kenya and by extension the whole country.

Ms Nyokabi singled out her county as one of those where most youth had spent their time and money in drinking instead of engaging in meaningful work or caring for their families.

“This planned genocide of the men from central Kenya for profit is shameful and perpetrators and beneficiaries should have their properties possessed by the government,” she said in a statement.

Most of the counties in the region have borne the brunt of excessive drinking with men and youth spending most of their time imbibing illicit brews.

The region, especially in Nyeri County, has noted an increase in cases of domestic violence and sometimes deaths with women battering their husbands who return home drunk.

“Kiambu has especially suffered the brunt of illicit brew where the county's male folk have ended up neglecting their lead positions in society, due to the over indulgence in illicit alcohol. Our sons have lost a generation of mentors,” the legislator said.

She further criticised the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) saying: “NACADA has been a toothless institution and a corruption hub for selfish people who immediately forget their mandate after taking the very critical position in the fight against alcohol.”
