The Kenya Dairy Board has asked vendors to abide by the set regulations or face the law.

The board’s chief dairy inspector, Evans Mwangi, on Wednesday said they arrested nine people who were later arraigned in a Kiambu court after they were found selling substandard milk in a raid conducted in Ruiru and parts of Thika Town.

Six of those arrested were charged with various offences, ranging from lack of licenses, transportation and packaging of milk in unhygienic containers and sale of milk mixed with preservatives.

The six were later released on fines of between Sh20,000 and Sh60,000 while the three others will be arraigned in court later.

Officials also seized 2,000 litres of unsafe milk in the early morning raid that lasted four hours.

The milk will be tested at the board’s laboratory.

Mr Mwangi said a majority of the milk vendors had complied with the board’s policies following a move by the agency to educate them on requisite hygiene skills and milk handling practices.

“I assure the public that the board has put in place adequate measures which ensures that milk sold to them is safe,” he said.
