Residents of Kiangage in Murang’a County Tuesday night set ablaze a matatu that was involved in an accident with a boda boda in which the rider died on the spot

Traffic Commander Silas Andiema said the matatu and the motorcycle collided along the Murang’a-Kangema road.

The matatu driver, his conductor and passengers fled after an angry crowd started pelting them with stones and avocados.

The driver later presented himself to the police.

After the matatu driver fled, the infuriated crowd overturned the vehicle and then set it on fire.

Police who arrived at the scene tried to prevent the people from going near the burning vehicle for fear of an explosion.

The motorcycle which was extensively damaged lay beside the rider’s lifeless body with avocados strewn all over the road.

Mr Andiema said that they have launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident and confirmed that the driver surrendered himself to the police later after escaping from the angry mob.

He urged drivers to be extra careful on the roads.

Township Ward MCA Charles Karina who visited the scene urged residents to refrain from talking the law in their hand saying that was a crime.

“I urge the people to restrain from taking the law into their hands as they might harm an innocent person and should therefore let the police officers deal with the matter and suspects till they prove their innocence in a court of law,” Mr Karina said.
