Boy dies as Kilifi nurses go on strike over pay

An 11-year-old boy died Tuesday morning as 500 nurses in Kilifi County Hospital went on strike demanding for salary increment and better working conditions.

The boy was taken to the hospital by his mother who told Nation.co.ke that the nurses refused to attend to him.

Ms Betty Tavurathe said she tried to seek assistance from the nurses but they told her that they are not working as they started the strike at midnight.

She said her son died at 5am.

Relatives of some of the patients admitted to the hospital transferred them to other health facilities.

Led by the the Kenya National Union of Nurses Kilifi County Chairman Leonard Nassoro and secretary Evans Ogato, the nurses said they will not resume work until their grievances are addressed.

The union leaders said they want the county government to address their grievances which include better working conditions and promotions.

The nurses also want to be paid house allowances approved by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
