Needy students from Kilifi County benefit from Sh350m Centum scholarship fund

Centum Investment has launched a scholarship fund which will benefit 50 bright high school students from Kilifi County.
A third of the beneficiaries of the Vipingo Development Limited Scholarship Fund launched over the weekend at Timboni Primary School will be girls.
Among those who witnessed the awards were Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, County Education Executive Salma Muhiddin, Centum Investment Committee Chairman Chris Kirubi, Centum CEO James Mworia and Director of Centum Capital Fred Murimi.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Governor Kingi applauded Centum for launching the scholarship fund.
Mr Kingi said the county launched a bursary kitty which gives Sh350 million towards education of needy students in the county.
“We must say thank you to Centum. We have been getting some scholarship assistance from some of the organisations working in the county, with most of them targeting not more than ten students.
COUNTY BURSARIES
“For Centum to award 50 sons and daughters of Kilifi these scholarships, that is a plus and we say thank you,” he said.
“As a county, we have also been [giving] bursaries worth Sh10 million in each of the 35 wards,” added Mr Kingi.
Mr Kirubi thanked the county government for its cooperation and stressed that education as the key to development in the world.
He also advocated for the empowerment of the girls and urged local communities to ensure they get educated.
INVEST IN GIRL EDUCATION
“Times when girls were being discriminated [against] in getting education is long gone.
"We can see the county education minister is a woman and what does that tell us as parents? It is clear that we must also invest in [education for girls],” said Mr Kirubi.
Dr Mworia asked the beneficiaries to be the torch bearers of the community and urged them to take advantage of the scholarships to realise their dreams.
Ms Salma also thanked Centum for the gesture and called for more scholarships from the organisation saying the vast county is in dire need of such initiatives because of the increasing demand for better education by the students.
Some of the beneficiaries’ expressed hope that with the assistance, they will perform well and be good examples to the community in Kilifi.
The scholarship initiative was launched in 2016 in collaboration with two communities in the Vipingo region, the Mjuma and the Bambani communities.
