Police launch manhunt after gang attacks AP camp in Kilifi

What you need to know:

  • During the attack, the attackers stole two guns before disappearing into the darkness.
  • The attack came days after Kilifi County Commissioner Albert Kobia warned that the county was under threat of attacks.

An Administration Police officer was killed and two of his colleagues seriously injured when a gang of over 20 people raided the Kinarani AP post at Mwanamwinga, Kaloleni, in Kilifi County on Thursday night.

The officer killed was the corporal in charge of the post.

During the attack, the gang stole two guns before disappearing into the darkness.

Kilifi County Police Commander Joseph Nthenge confirmed the incident, adding that a manhunt had been launched for the attackers believed to be still hiding in the region.

“There was an attack at Kinarani AP post in which an officer lost his life after he was slashed to death by the gang that was armed with crude weapons.

“During the attack, two guns were lost and we have dispatched a team of police officers to track down the attackers,” Mr Nthenge said.

He said it was too early to know who was responsible for the attack.

The attack came days after Kilifi County Commissioner Albert Kobia warned that the county was under threat of attacks from terrorists and other criminal gangs.

He later alleged in an interview that Al-Shabaab was closely collaborating with the Mombasa Republican Council to spread terror in the county.

The MRC has been blamed for a series of attacks targeting police in Kilifi.

Early this year, Mr Kobia led a team of security officers to Kaya Jibana and Kaya Chonyi forests, where some suspected MRC members were believed to be training to launch attacks.

The police found a military training ground and recovered training materials, including wooden guns and manuals.
