IEBC clears more aspirants in Malindi by-election

The process of clearing five remaining candidates for the March 7 Malindi Parliamentary by-election by the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission got underway Tuesday morning.

Mr Ruben Katana of Kadu Asili Party arrived at the IEBC offices at 8.30am accompanied by party leader and Kaloleni MP Gunga Mwinga.

He was cleared at 10.30am after which he addressed journalists outside the IEBC offices in the company of his supporters and Mr Mwinga.

Mr Katana, 29, pledged to solve various problems facing residents including unemployment, education, poverty and land issues if elected.

“These problems need to be solved once and for all. It is so sad to see many youths languishing in poverty due to unemployment,” he said.

The Kaloleni MP urged IEBC to be on the look-out to deter any attempt of rigging.

The party was expected to launch its campaign rallies later Tuesday afternoon in its bid to woo residents to vote for Mr Katana.

Others who were expected to present their documents for clearance later Tuesday included Furhan Mohamed (MDP), Faud Kombe (KANU), Mr Peter Ponda and Mr Ahmed Maamun (NAM).

On Monday, five contestants were cleared to vie for the seat. They later held rallies in Malindi Town.

They included Mr William Mtengo (ODM), Mr Philip Charo (Jubilee), Mr Attas Sharrif (LPK), Mr David Mangi (Shirikisho) and Mr Nelson Gunga of the Federal Party of Kenya.

Cord rallies were led by its principals Raila Odinga, Moses Wetangula and Kalonzo Musyoka while JAP campaigns were led by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale and Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro.
