Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo on Saturday announced that the dusk-to-dawn curfew in Lamu County has been extended by a month.

Mr Kimaiyo also ordered police to escort all public transport vehicles operating the Lamu-Garsen road.

“I've this morning extended curfew orders within Lamu County from 21st September to 22nd October 2014 from 6.30 pm to 6.30 am,” he said in a post on his Twitter account.

The curfew was imposed in July after gunmen staged a series of attacks in Mpeketoni, Panda Nguo, Hindi and Witu.

More than 90 people were killed and 3,000 others displaced from their homes in the attacks.

PROHIBITED AREAS

Last month, Mr Kimaiyo announced that the curfew had been extended to September 21 to allow security officers “accomplish the mission.”

The police boss said security personnel were still conducting operations in the area and that Boni and adjoining forests remain prohibited areas.

“I assure the Lamu County residents that during the operations, their rights will be protected and their security will always be our priority,” he said.

Mr Kimaiyo urged Lamu residents to cooperate with security agencies during the security operations.

“I urge Lamu County residents to continue with this spirit and share any information for a subsequent secure environment and for better results,” he said Saturday.
