Kindiki accused of using Senate to intimidate governor

Tharaka-Nithi Deputy Governor Mati Murithi has accused Senator Kithure Kindiki of using the Senate to intimidate Governor Samuel Ragwa and his government.
Speaking on Thursday at Tunyai Day Secondary School in Tharaka where he distributed Sh3 million to schools for infrastructure, Mr Murithi said Prof Kindiki is using the Senate to fight the governor for supporting businessman Kiambi Kiriiro, who has announced he would be vying for the Senate seat.
“We are aware that Prof Kindiki is using [the] Senate to save his sinking political boat by branding us thieves,” said Mr Murithi.
Mr Murithi denied that county officials looted Sh1.2 billion in public funds in 2013/2014 financial budget.
He accused the senator of failing to deliver on the promises he made to the public when he campaigned for office and using others as a shield.
“If the senator has failed the residents of Tharaka-Nithi, he should give room for other able people,” he said.
In his tour of the county last week, Prof Kindiki accused Mr Ragwa and his deputy of misappropriating public funds and vowed to use the responsible institutions to pursue them until the money is recovered.
He said nothing has been achieved with the billions of shillings allocated to the county from the national government and those collected as revenue.
“The county leaders have been allocating funds to ghost projects like the Marimanti Hospital mortuary, which is said to have used Sh7 million and whereas such project does not exist,” said Prof Kindiki.
Governor Ragwa recently appeared before the Senate Public Accounts and Investments Committee to answer audit queries on the 2013/2014 financial budget but could not account for Sh1.2 billion, including Sh111 million meant for health services.
He is also under investigation over "forged" payment vouchers presented to the Auditor-General and is said to have presented only photocopies instead of originals for all bank and county transactions.
