Governor Amason Kingi has accused some officers of defunct county councils of colluding with powerful and wealthy people to grab land meant for public utilities in different parts of the county.

The property scandal is hindering the county’s development plans, said the county boss.

The governor gave a one- week ultimatum to owners of illegal structures at the Mariakani open air market to demolish them or they will be brought down by the county government.

“During their final days in office, some of the officials grabbed public land and sold it to private developers. These people distorted the town planning maps and complicated the county’s expansion plans. We are warning them that their time is up. We shall soon take back the land,” said the governor.

He spoke on Saturday when he inspected work to expand the market.

GRABBING OF PAVEMENTS

The grabbing of pavements in Mariakani town is another problem that is affecting the growth of the urban area, he said.

“The people who erected structures on pavements did not adhere to the plan of this town. We will not allow this,” said the governor.

He later told residents in Mariakani town that the county had set aside Sh12 million for a modern bus park.

Mr Kingi praised the cooperation he was getting from national government officials stationed in the county.

He said since they are all working for the common good, they should remain focused on delivering services to the people wherever they are operating from.
Kaloleni MP Gunga Mwinga, who accompanied the governor, promised to tarmac the road from Mariakani to Tsangatsini.
