No place to throw garbage in Kisii as dumping site grabbed

Residents of Kisii County's main urban centres will have to wait a little longer as authorities scout for an alternative garbage dumping site since the original one was grabbed.

Governor James Ongwae has urged the residents to be patient as the county government seeks a solution to the problem.

"There is some ray of hope,” said the governor in an interview.

The county has been without a designated dumping site for a long time now after the initial site was grabbed.

Residents vehemently opposed attempts by the county administration to set up another dumping site in Gesonso.

They held street demonstrations demanding that such plans be shelved.

However, Governor Ongwae expressed confidence that this matter will soon be a thing of the past.

SEEK ALTERNATIVE SITE

He said the county government had placed adverts for alternative land for a new site.

"It's just a matter of time, we have been getting favourable responses," he said.

He said they would subject the matter to public participation once everything is ready.

He, however, refused to disclose the precise area where the new site will be situated.

Earlier in the year, Deputy Governor Joash Maangi said scarcity of land in the county was to blame for the problem.

He said there are plans to set up a garbage processing plant, where trash would be converted to fertilizer.
