A family in Kisii County is in shock after the body of a relative went missing at a mortuary in Kisii town.

Police intervened after a scuffle ensued between the angry mourners and mortuary staff when they discovered their relative's body could not be found on Thursday.

The body of Evans Obino — who died last week in an accident at Longisa in Bomet County — had been brought to the Christa Marianne Hospital mortuary in Kisii town.

“We came here at 9am to collect the body of my son Evans Obino, but the attendant showed us a different body,” the deceased’s mother Milcah Obino protested.

She said they had planned to bury him on Friday at his Chirenge home in Kiogoro Ward.

“We are very disappointed with the morgue attendants for causing us more grief. We have heard that they had handed the body to a different family who have since buried him,” said Mr Obino's widow Eucales Nyansiaboka.

She said they had been kept waiting for long without getting answers from the mortuary staff.

“The rule is bodies are handed over once affected families provide the required legal identification documents. We are confused how this came to happen,” added Betty Obino, a sister of the deceased.
