Several people were injured after a police vehicle clearing traffic for President Uhuru Kenyatta collided with a 14-seater matatu in Kisii County.

The vehicle was leading the president's entourage back to Suneka airstrip when it collided head-on with the matatu at Gesonso outside Mount Kenya University campus in Kisii town.

Witnesses said the police vehicle was speeding when the incident happened.

Kisii County Commissioner Samwel Njora said the matatu driver was trying to make a u-turn in the middle of the highway.

Mr Njora said a number of passengers in the matatu were injured, but they yet to establish the exact number.

Kisii Central Base Commander Eric Kithinji who was in the police vehicle escaped uninjured while his driver sustained minor injuries, Mr Njora said.

"Most of those injured were from the matatu but we will issue more information on the number of people hurt," he said.

The incident forced the President to stop-by for a while to assess the situation. He left after the injured were taken to hospitals.
