Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya has played down the rising political temperature in his county following his defection to the Jubilee Party.

Some ODM supporters have labelled him a traitor.

During a funds drive for Tiwi Village Elders Self-help Group on Sunday, Mr Mvurya said he would not respond to the accusations.

He asked those interested in Kwale politics to continue talking, adding that the people would have the final say.

“The media have been very happy carrying reactions of every leader but I am not in that league. What is important is to ensure that my people get good services,” he said.

The governor said his woes began in 2013 and that he had been fought by people who were not even interested in his seat.

He urged locals not to be carried away by political waves.

“I don’t want to see you fight one another over politics. If it is me being talked about, I know how to defend myself. Do not fight on my behalf,” he said.

The governor said his “wisdom and commitment to serve residents will remain the same” regardless of the political party he chooses.

Land and Mining executive Ali Mafimbo said he was the one who advised Mr Mvurya to ditch ODM.

He said for the past three months, the governor had not been at peace after some people threatened to deny him a ticket during party primaries.

“There are elders, and I’m sorry that we made a decision without consulting them. We will come back to you to provide details,” he said.
