Laikipia County to start boda boda academy

An academy will be established to train motorcycle riders in Laikipia County on road safety, Governor Joshua Irungu has said.
Mr Irungu noted that motorcycles were an important means of transport in the area and that the academy will help the riders in reducing the rate of motorcycle-related accidents.
The county government has already set aside Sh10 million to help motorcycle operators in the county sustain their business through the formation of an umbrella saving and credit co-operative society.
“My government plans to establish an academy which will be a platform for the operators to grasp and comprehend rules and regulations pertaining to road transport and safety since we understand that this sector is a major employer,” the governor said.
He spoke when he commissioned sheds for boda boda operators constructed with the assistance of the British Army Training Unit in Kenya (Batuk) in Nanyuki town.
Operators in Nanyuki Town are members of Nanyuki boda boda Sacco Society which was formed three years ago.
The governor said all operators in the county needed to be in an umbrella sacco society for them to benefit from funds allocated to county governments.
This, he added, would help them have better bargaining power and speak in one voice.
Laikipia East cooperative officer Paul Ringera said saccos played an important role in the growth of the country’s economy especially for the small-scale business sector.
