A dam worth Sh13m was built on private land in Laikipia, a watchdog committee said Monday.

Public Accounts Committee chairman Peter Thomi said Lusiwa dam in Segera Ward was one of several scandal-ridden projects by the executive that his committee was investigating.

“There was no proper due diligence done to establish the ownership of the land before the project was started and the contractor was paid immediately,” Mr Thomi told a press conference in Nanyuki.

Some members of the county assembly have been pushing for the dissolution of the committee saying that it is not effective.

One of them, Ms Rose Maitai, said the committee has never submitted any report on the executive in the assembly.

However, Mr Thomi said the committee was scrutinising the awarding of several tenders by the executive and would table its reports and recommendations.

The committee also presented a report on assets and liabilities of all the defunct local authorities that existed in the county after interrogating the former officials.

Mr Thomi said the members were taken through the document when he presented it in the assembly but they did not discuss it as it was huge and they asked for more time to peruse it.
