Former Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Thuita Mwangi has confirmed that he will be vying for the Laikipia County governor’s seat.

On Wednesday afternoon, Mr Mwangi, accompanied by an aide, a bodyguard and a driver, entered a food kiosk near the office of the county commissioner's office in Nanyuki for a cup of porridge where he mingled with crowds.

Although Mr Mwangi was in March 2016 acquitted in the Sh1.6 billion corruption case involving the procurement of the Tokyo Embassy, some people in the crowd raised issue.

Others wanted him to explain how he will change the county if he is elected as the governor.

“Today, I came to sort out an issue at the Registrar of Lands office and when we were told to go back in the afternoon, somebody decided that we have a cup of porridge,” he told the crowd.

Confirming his bid for governor’s seat, Mr Mwangi said the county needed a different style of managing it and its resources.

He said he has been consulting widely before making the decision to run for the seat.

He said he will call for a meeting with the Laikipia East residents.

The former PS has kept the residents guessing as to whether he will seek the county chief’s job or not.

A few months ago he held a thank-giving service at Rumuruti Members’ Club after the court acquitted him in the Tokyo case where he said that he would be announcing his next move.
