What you need to know:

  • The wildlife admirers will appreciate the unparalleled value of being the most accessible place in the whole country where you have the chance to spot the majestic greater kudu.
  • Lake Bogoria Kudu Restaurant and Choma Ranch offers a lean menu with emphasis on international Cuisine, African foods and a variety of other food items of exceptional quality.

The word spectacular is what comes in the mind when one visits Lake Bogoria.

It is located in the North Rift not far from Lake Baringo, about 25 kilometers apart.

However, it is confounding when you realise that one is saline while the other has fresh water.

Thousands flamingos are a common sight in the lake across the year.

Lake Bogoria looks breathtakingly beautiful with the beautiful light pink flamingos all over it. Lesser Flamingo is the smallest species of flamingo.

"The Prettiest sight you will ever see is thousands of pink Flamingos feeding on algae, created from their droppings mixing in the warm alkaline waters and plankton or when they are taking off," says Mr James Kimaru, the Reservist.

The lake displays a superb scenery of bluish hills populated with dry bush, grasslands and riverine forests, framing the calm waters pinned with flamingos.

Beyond the eastern shore, the soil rises abruptly to 600 meters and at the opposite edge, the earth forms strangely coloured swampy crusts, which break up in deep gaps spitting stinky sulphur waters and steam jets.

The close-up geysers, the pink brushstrokes of the flamingos on the lake, and far away the dramatic backdrop of the Laikipia Escarpment, everything in Bogoria conveys an unrivalled scenery.

But watch out, don't get too close, the signposts warning "Stop - danger zone - go back" are serious: the earth collapses under your feet and underneath there is boiling water.

The wildlife admirers will appreciate the unparalleled value of being the most accessible place in the whole country where you have the chance to spot the majestic greater kudu.

Definitely Lake Bogoria is a place to be if you want to experience magical moments.

"People think that Lake Nakuru is the only place you find flamingos. Every season the birds will always come to lake Bongoria," Mr Benjamin Cheboi, the Governor of Baringo County says.

"This season we are telling Kenyans, local and foreign tourists to visit Lake Bogoria where they can be able to witness some of the most beautiful and spectacular scenery in birdwatching,” Mr Cheboi says.

Lake Bogoria lies in a volcanic region in Kenya. It is often called a “soda lake” because of the high concentration of soda that oozes from the volcanic soil and mixes with the lake water. Lake Bogoria also has many hot springs “geysers” that pour boiling water into the lake.

The lake has stretched beyond its usual boundaries.

All you can see though are hilly contours that hide the lake in the distance, away from view.

In the evening, one can always go to Lake Bogoria Spa Resort which is just a walking distance allowing you to be close to the lake’s many wonders.

It is a haven by local standards. A stream of warm water emerges from a tunnel just beneath ground level.

You can see a few ostriches walking gracefully on the green lawns.

Lunch or supper at the resort is something to look forward to.

Goat meat is the most revered delicacy. Its tenderness, evidence of natural rearing, makes the meal worthwhile.

Lake Bogoria Kudu Restaurant and Choma Ranch offers a lean menu with emphasis on international Cuisine, African foods and a variety of other food items of exceptional quality.

It is situated at Lake Bogoria Spa Resort, a resort famously known as the “healing place” because of its therapeutic values associated with the “Spa” and the Hot springs geysers.

The Choma Ranch is a five-minute drive from the Lake Bogoria. The nature of its setting is such that all international and local tourists who visit Lake Bogoria National Reserve Hot Springs are truly refreshed.
