Lamu County Assembly Speaker Mohamed Hashim has dismissed reports appearing in the media that the Assembly will soon debate a motion proposing the ban on miniskirts.

The Assembly has been in the news for lining up for debate, proposed laws to ban dreadlocks and miniskirts.

Speaking to the Sunday Nation on phone on Saturday, Mr Hashim said the motion on miniskirts was shot down when it was introduced in the Assembly.

“The proposal came under a notice of motion and I refused it on the basis of being against the Constitution,” he added.

He expressed concern that the media reports have portrayed the county government as being “intolerant and fundamentalist”.

Mr Hashim said that it was not the Assembly’s intention to curtail people’s rights and freedoms.
