The Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has declared a dusk to dawn curfew in Lamu County following escalating insecurity.

The one month curfew, which starts on Saturday, July 20, 2014 and expected to end on August 20, 2014 will be enforced between 6.30pm and 6.30am.

In a press release to newsrooms, Mr Kimaiyo said he issued the curfew orders in accordance with Section 8 (1) of the Public Order Act.

He further said that all residents of Lamu County were to remain indoors during the curfew period unless one had a written permit from the County Commander of Police.

The curfew orders follow the most recent attack by unknown gunmen who ambushed a bus along the Lamu Witu road Friday night.

The attackers killed seven people including four police officers who had responded to a distress call after the bus was ambushed.

FORESTS PROHIBITED AREAS

While issuing the curfew orders, IG Kimaiyo also declared Boni and other adjacent forests to be prohibited areas.

He warned residents against venturing into the forests as they would be treated as hostile suspects and would be arrested.

He at the same time ordered that all public transport vehicles plying the Lamu-Garsen road use police escort during the day.

The orders came soon after Coast Regional Coordinator Samuel Kilele cautioned all Public Service Vehicles (PSV) operators, motorists and private vehicle owners against plying the highway from 6.00 pm to 6.00 am until further notice.

Mr Kilele said the night travel ban would help make the security operation currently being undertaken in Lamu to be successful.
