Muslim leaders have raised the alarm over the use of the buibui by criminals.

The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya's organising secretary, Sheikh Mohammed Khalifa, said this was taking root in the county.

He spoke during a press briefing at their offices in Mwembe Tayari.

Sheikh Khalifa asked security officers to investigate and apprehend all those misusing the gown.

“We are worried that criminals are now attacking people and stealing while wearing the respectable women’s garment. We condemn such heinous acts. It is unlawful for a man to wear a woman’s clothing and vice versa,” he said.

Sheikh Khalifa warned Muslim women against lending their buibuis to criminals.

“A woman who lends her garment to a person who commits crime while wearing it will face the same fate that befalls the criminal,” he said. Such women are disrespectful of their families, he added.

TOLERANCE NEEDED
The religious leader said the scriptures are clear on what women and men should wear.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Khalifa asked Kenyans to be on the lookout for women wearing buibuis in nightclubs and bars.

“Let’s shame such individuals,” he added.

At the same time, the Muslim leaders raised concern over insecurity in different parts of the country.

They asked Kenyans to stop turning against their neighbours.

They called for unity and tolerance among peoples and religious groupings.

“Nowadays, when you switch on the TV or radio, or read a newspaper, the news is about killings. You will learn about a man who has turned against his daughter and killed her. There are cases of killings arising from ethnic clashes. The situation in Isiolo, Baringo, Samburu and Mandera is disturbing,” said Sheikh Khalifa.
