Baringo County leaders have warned of looming hunger in the area and urged the government to shore up its strategic food reserves.
The leaders, among them Deputy Governor Mathew Tuitoek, Baringo Central MP Sammy Mwaita, Women Representative Grace Kiptui and County Speaker William Kamket, said the current dry spell was a precursor of a worse situation.
They spoke at the weekend during a funds drive to aid the construction of a new church.
HISTORIC DROUHGT
The harambee was held at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Kabarnet.
Mr Mwaita said that this year’s drought was the worst in Baringo County’s history, adding that many schools were on the verge of closure due to lack of food and water.
Major water sources and pastures had dried up.
“The national government should ensure that the country has enough food in the grain reserve,” Mr Kamket said.
