Six die after lorry overturns in Homa Bay

Six people, among them five businesswomen and a boy, have Wednesday morning died when the lorry they were travelling in overturned along the Kadongo-Mawego road in Homa Bay. The women who had been given a ride on the lorry were heading to Miruka market in Nyamira County. MAP|GOOGLE.

Six people died early Wednesday morning after a lorry they were travelling in overturned along the Kadongo-Mawego road.

The lorry which was carrying sand is said to have veered off the road near Kadongo trading center in Homa Bay County.

The dead included four businesswomen, a man and a 13-year old boy. They are said to have been suffocated by the sand after the lorry overturned in the 7am accident.

They businesswomen were heading to Miruka market in Nyamira County.

The women were going to sell mangoes and sweet patatoes at the market, according to Mr Robert Omenda, a witness.

They had been given a lift on the lorry which had loaded sand at the nearby Kobala market and was transporting it to Nyamira.

Five other victims of the accident were rescued and taken to hospital.

Two were rushed to Okita Nursing Home in Kadongo while the others who sustained multiple injuries were taken to Rachuonyo Level Four Hospital.

However, they were later transferred to the nearby Matata Nursing Home as doctors at Rachuonyo hospital were on strike.

The cause of the accident could not be immediately established.

Villagers had a hectic time trying to save other victims who were still covered by sand.

Police have launched investigations into the accident.
