MCAs in Kakamega may be forced to return Sh11 million they awarded themselves as allowances.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale accused ward representatives of awarding themselves millions of shillings in sitting allowances at the expense of development.

“They may be compelled to return the money once the Senate has discussed Auditor-General and Controller of Budget reports which revealed the spending,” he said.

“The reports clearly indicate how the money was spent on payments fabricated allowances.”

Dr Khalwale, who is also Senate Public Accounts Committee chairman said it is wrong for MCAs to divert funds meant for development into their pockets as locals continue to wallow in poverty. Kakamega is ranked among poor counties.

The county received close to Sh15 billion for development which Dr Khalwale said must be accounted for.

“The MCAs must brace themselves for hard times ahead because the Senate will not relent. They must return public money they earned illegally.”

“We cannot allow them to pay themselves allowances for sitting, standing, travelling, singing and even running while our people are suffering.”
