Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) have asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to include them in the fight against alcoholism in central Kenya.

President Kenyatta on Wednesday declared war against alcoholism in the region saying it was to blame for the many deaths and malfunctioning men.

Mr Kenyatta ordered MPs from the region as well as county commissioners in the area to enforce the revocation of licenses and give him a status report next Monday.

On Thursday, Mr Albert Kochai, the County Assemblies Forum (CAF) secretary general said that their members would play a big role in helping change the situation.

“As the people very close to the community, the MCAs can play an integral role in this war. The forum asks the members to help in the fight of the cancerous thing of alcoholism that is eating away our youth,” said Mr Kochai, the Elgeyo Marakwet Speaker.

Mr Kochai, who said the move by the President was bold and decisive, also blamed the Kenya Bureau of Statistics (Kebs) for the problem.

“Kebs must come out of the boardrooms and go out of its way to ensure that we catch all those people killing our youth with illicit brews,” he said.

The County Assemblies Forum is a body that brings together all the MCAs and their Speakers.

The illicit brew menace has taken a big toll on Central Kenya with women form the region demonstrating on several occasions complaining of absent husbands who had absconded their conjugal roles.

Mr Kochai said that the fight against the brew was communal and should be supported from all sides.
