MP orders settlers to move out of land

  • The MP, who is also the chairman of the House Committee on Security and Administration, said the Pokot had set up at least 40 homesteads on Tugen land. He asked the settlers to pull down the houses by the end of the seven days.
  • The MP accused some politicians of openly inciting members of their community to buy guns to fight their neighbours.

Members of the Pokot community occupying land belonging to the Tugen and Njemps in Baringo South have been given a week to move out.

Tiaty MP Asman Kamama asked the Pokot to leave the areas they are occupying in Arabal, Komilo, Karaw and Rugus or they would be evicted by security officers.
“They should move to their land now that the rains have come and graze their animals on their land,” said Mr Kamama.

Addressing journalists in Nakuru Town yesterday, the MP said his directive is in line with an agreement reached among leaders of the warring communities.
“The never-ending conflicts between the Pokot and Tugen will only end if each community agrees to stay within its boundaries,” said Mr Kamama.

The MP, who is also the chairman of the House Committee on Security and Administration, said the Pokot had set up at least 40 homesteads on Tugen land. He asked the settlers to pull down the houses by the end of the seven days.

At the same time, Mr Kamama has said the disarmament efforts by the government in Baringo and Pokot counties would only succeed if Inspector-General Joseph Boinnet arrests political inciters in the region.

The MP accused some politicians of openly inciting members of their community to buy guns to fight their neighbours.

GUN-BELT REGIONS

He said he had shared the information with the Inspector-General and Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery.

“Baringo and Pokot counties will remain gun-belt regions because some political leaders are encouraging their communities to arm themselves instead of encouraging disarmament.

“It is an open secret that both the Tugen and Pokot own guns but when an elected leader openly incites his community and no action is taken against him, then these two counties will remain at loggerheads,” he said.
