A secondary school in Tana River County has been closed down after a fire destroyed a dormitory in a wave of arson attacks across the country.

While addressing over 500 hundred Madogo Secondary School students at the institution on Thursday morning before sending them away, Tana north Education official Silvester Kiilu said parents will be notified when the school will be re-opened.

Mr Kiilu commended the students for remaining calm when their dormitories were set ablaze by unknown assailants.

According to school Principal Mr Maina Gwaro the students were in their classes during evening studies when the dormitory, about 100 meters away, was set on fire.

He said although investigation were underway to establish those behind the incident, students couldn’t be blamed.

According to him, the fire could have been started by outsiders as the school does not have a fence around the dormitories.

Some of the students who also spoke to the Nation claimed there had been a leaflet warning that the dormitory would be burnt before Friday.

When the Nation team visited the school on Thursday, some students could be seen in some groups and parents who had come to the school conversing as they pondered over their next move.

Area OCS, the school board chairman and small number of parents were at the school before the students were disbursed.
