KWS rangers kill poacher near rhino sanctuary in Chyulu park

Police in Makueni are on the lookout for a suspected poacher who escaped with gunshot wounds following a Monday night confrontation with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers at Chyulu National Park where his accomplice was killed.

On Tuesday, Makindu OCPD Henrietta Wanyama confirmed that KWS rangers who had laid an ambush on the suspected poachers near a rhino sanctuary inside the park had shot dead one suspect.

"The two were armed with bows and arrows and an axe and after confrontation with KWS rangers one of them was gunned down as the other escaped into the thickets," she told Nation.

Accompanied by KWS rangers, police officers collected the body of the suspected poacher on Tuesday and took it to Makindu Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

Police also collected a bow and a set of arrows that lay in a neat heap near the lifeless body.

Ms Wanyama said: "We could not immediately identify the body and we are waiting for relatives who may come forth to identify him."

She appealed to anyone who may come across the injured survivor to report to the police.
