A man committed suicide at Kibung’a Sub-District Hospital staff quarters after stabbing his wife several times.

Mr Isaac Mwasia attacked his wife, Ms Alice Kathambi, at their house within the hospital, where she works as a nurse, at around 10 am on Saturday.

He reportedly swallowed some poison, thinking his wife was dead.

It was their son who found his unconscious mother lying in a pool of blood in the sitting room when he returned home from church at around 2pm. His father’s lifeless body was in the bedroom.

Ms Nancy Kathini, a neighbour, said the couple’s young boy alerted a casual worker at the hospital. Ms Kathambi was taken to Nkubu Consolata Hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition.

Neighbours said the attack could have been a result of a domestic dispute.

“The man never showed signs of frustration. He might have had differences with the wife,” said businessman Luke Mutegi. Mr Mwasia was a businessman at Kibung’a Market.

Tharaka South OCPD Dominic Mukoma said police were investigating the incident.

“The woman was stabbed (several times). She has serious injuries in the head that may have been caused by a blunt object,” he said. Mr Mwasia’s body was taken to the Meru Level Five Hospital mortuary.
