A man has died in Limuru, Kiambu County, after participating in a beer-drinking competition.

Following the death, residents have been warned against engaging in such potentially dangerous competitions.

Tom Karingo Njuguna, 30, was drinking with some friends at Mugumo Bar at Karanjee village when they decided to engage in a competition to see who could drink the most alcohol in the shortest time.

Mr Karingo gulped down three bottles of 250ml Meakins spirit and won the competition.

He took home Sh200 and a mobile phone, the winner’s prize donated by other revellers in the bar.

However, the winner was in such a drunken stupor that he had to be carried home.

Some said that he even fainted after drinking the spirit and that was the last time Mr Karingo was seen alive. He died in his sleep.

EMPTY STOMACH

It was suspected that the deceased died from drinking highly concentrated alcohol on an empty stomach and within a short time.

Limuru police were called at about 2am and found the man dead in his house.

They launched investigations into what he had done before going home, and established that he had drank alcoholic spirits in a competition.

Assistant County Commissioner Lawrence Omondi confirmed the incident and said the deceased was involved in a bet at a local bar, where the person who would drink the most alcohol in a few minutes would win a mobile phone and Sh200.

“People must stop drinking, and if they must, let them drink responsibly then. We have lost a man because he decided to play with alcohol. Eat well before taking alcohol and also drink a reasonable amount,” said Mr Omondi.

Acting Administration Police Commander John Opiyo said police had launched investigations into the incident.

The body of the deceased was removed to City Mortuary pending a post-mortem procedure and further investigations into his death.
