Police on Monday recovered 324 goats and sheep that were stolen in Darade in Marsabit County three weeks ago.

The animals will be returned to their owners once all stolen livestock are recovered, Marsabit County police boss Ben Kogo said.

It’s not yet clear how many livestock were stolen during the raid, with the Gabra community claiming more than 1,000 were stolen but authorities estimate the figure to be around 600.

Mr Kogo said the bandits who stole the animals have not been arrested. The attackers had fled towards southern Ethiopia.

Last week, Marsabit Governor Ukur Yattani accompanied County Commissioner Magu Mutindika and Mr Kogo to a peace meeting between elders from the Gabra and Dasanach pastoralist communities at Illeret.

“We had given the Dasanach community an ultimatum of four days during the meeting to return the stolen livestock,” said Mr Kogo.

He said security officers from Ethiopia have also recovered 30 animals but were yet to surrender them to the Kenyan authorities.

Meanwhile, Mr Kogo said a peace meeting was held to end clashes between the Ajuran and Degodia communities.

The meeting was held in Ambalo, Sololo, on Monday following the killing of a herder during clashes over grazing grounds.
