Lamu leaders are in the dark over the proposed Sh164 billion power plant in the county, they said Thursday.

Lamu Senator Abu Chiaba called on the government to come out clearly about the project, effects it will have on locals and compensation rates.

“We have heard about it but the State should tell us so that we are able to tell our people what the project is all about. Right now, we are just getting information from the media,” he told the Nation on phone.

Amu Power Company (APCL), a consortium that brings together Gulf Energy and Centum Investment, is developing a 960 MW coal-fired power plant at Kwasafi area in Hindi-Magogoni of Lamu County.

They were speaking during a meeting led by environmentalist Sanjay Gandhi Thursday.

During the talks, residents asked the government to provide more information on the same.

The farmers’ spokesperson Ali Swaleh, asked the investors to ensure they came up with proper methods to prevent any negative impact on the environment.

Mr Swaleh also said the power consortium should ensure that no farmer in the area will be displaced without being compensated.

“Our major concern is for all who will be affected by the project are fully compensated for their land.
