According to the project coordinator, Ms Anne Githui, the event, the first of its kind in the county, has attracted 18 participants.

“On Saturday, the beauty pageant enters its second stage, where each contestant will showcase her creativity.

"Tutors have been teaching them how to catwalk, have confidence and be creative,” Ms Githui told the Nation by phone from Chuka.

The contest, which is slated to end on August 30, 2014, started in early July. The first stage, held at Kimwa Hotel in Chuka, consisted of introducing the beauty queens into the competition and introducing Tharaka-Nithi as a county.

The contestants are undergoing different forms of training ahead of the finals.

EMPOWER YOUTH

Ms Githui said the competition that will determine Miss Chuka 2014 is meant to empower youth socially and economically.

“This contest is aimed at giving youths in Chuka a representative to spearhead their issues as well as promote the image of Chuka through charitable and other community engagements like youth empowerment, entrepreneurship and mentorship programs, community clean ups and visiting charity homes,” she said.

Organisers say Miss Chuka 2014 is a quality platform for young aspiring models and fashion designers in Chuka to showcase their dynamic creativity and talent.

Ms Githui said the maiden contest creates an opportunity for contestants to positively compete as they gain creative inspiration and network with some of the top models in the country.

GIVE INSIGHT

“This is also a way of helping and giving aspiring models and new designers an insight as they seek to establish themselves in the industry,” she said.

She said all contestants are expected to work under the theme, "Beauty with Diligence" to qualify for the coveted title of Miss Chuka Award 2014.

The main award will be the Miss Chuka Top Runway Model Award.

Among invited guests are some top runway models, fashion designers, performing artists, county government officials and members of the corporate world from different counties.

“We expect Miss Chuka to be the most sought-after event in Kenya. That is why we put together a highly intelligent and professional team of people with a sense of art to form an advisory board,” Ms Githui said.
